Zach Arnett Named Head Football Coach at Mississippi State
Former Defensive Coordinator Takes Over After Arnett's Firing
Starkville, Mississippi -
Mississippi State University has promoted defensive coordinator Zach Arnett to head football coach, the school announced Monday. Arnett, 35, replaces Joe Moorhead, who was fired after three seasons.
Arnett has been with Mississippi State since 2018, serving as defensive coordinator under Moorhead. He previously worked as a defensive analyst at Clemson and a graduate assistant at Tennessee.
As defensive coordinator, Arnett helped Mississippi State improve its defensive rankings significantly. In 2019, the Bulldogs ranked 11th in the nation in total defense and 12th in scoring defense.
Arnett's promotion comes after Mississippi State fired Moorhead following a 4-6 start to the 2020 season. Moorhead had a record of 14-12 in three seasons at Mississippi State, including a 6-6 mark in 2019.
Arnett will be the 35th head football coach in Mississippi State history. He is the youngest head coach in the SEC and the first Mississippi State head coach to have played for the Bulldogs since Bob Tyler in 1941.
